Old Town at the Royal BC Museum has reopened with a new approach designed to inform and inspire visitors to the exhibition.
At Destination Greater Victoria (DGV), we’re thrilled to have this part of the museum open to the public again. Old Town is a beloved exhibit in one of our most important, iconic attractions that has garnered positive feedback from visitors for decades.
In 2019, DGV completed a full-year program of visitor-focused research. In the 2019 Visitor Survey Report, almost half of the online follow-up survey respondents named the Royal BC Museum as the attraction they visited most frequently. And, when asked to nominate the main highlights of their visit to Greater Victoria, the Royal BC Museum took top spot.
The Old Town, New Approach exhibition brings back notable favourites including the garage, kitchen, Chinatown, hotel, train station and more alongside a new series of contextual panels and displays that will continually change over time with community collaboration. The exhibition reopened with a commitment to accurate, respectful and diverse storytelling, upholding the principals laid out in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
Congratulations to the Honourable Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, for making the prudent decision to reopen this important part of our museum. We look forward to welcoming people from around the world to tour the exhibit again to learn more about this part of our history.

Beyond Van Gogh is a new truly immersive experience. While other shows use virtual reality or still images, our show breaks barriers by incorporating both still and moving art.
Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear, and disappear, flow across multi-surfaces, the minutia of details titillating our heightened senses. The show is projected on every surface around you, this makes you feel as though you have stepped directly into a Van Gogh painting. We accompany the show with a beautiful score and include many other surprises!

The clown Mauro envisions that his own burial will take place amid a carnival atmosphere and be attended by tender angels. The show contrasts the grand with the intimates, the silly with the tragic, and the beauty of perfection with the appeal of imperfection. It also emphasizes the strength and vulnerability of the clown as well as his knowledge and generosity to represent the aspect of humanity that exists in each of us.
